Let’s clear something up straight away: ACL rehab isn’t necessarily slow – it just feels like it.
Hear me out.
Most surgeons and physios (the good ones, anyway) should be telling you upfront: ACL rehab is a 12-month process if you’re doing it properly. Not rushed. Not patched together with random exercises from Instagram. Done right.
The 12-Month Reality
For anyone under 21, the return to sport must not happen before 12 months.
Why?
Because the risk of re-tear skyrockets if you go back too soon. The research is clear on this. Let’s not become that stat.
And even for adults — yep, the same applies.
I don’t return any of my clients to sport before 12 months, because healing, strength, control, and confidence take time. We’re not just rehabbing a knee — we’re rebuilding your foundation.

What Takes So Long?
ACL rehab takes time because it should.
The graft needs to heal and integrate into your body. That alone takes several months. But that’s just the biological side.
What about:

Regaining full extension and flexion

Building strength equal to the uninjured leg

Re-learning movement patterns to reduce injury risk

Passing return-to-run and return-to-sport testing

Getting your confidence back
That’s not quick work. That’s a full-time process.

Sure, you can go back at 3, 6, or 9 months.
But if you haven’t passed the right testing — or if you’re guessing your way through rehab — you’re just rolling the dice on reinjury.
To the same knee. Or the other one.
