Decrease Knee Swelling Post ACL Surgery

The One Elevation Tip That Could Transform Your Recovery

Alright, let me let you in on a little secret that could seriously change your recovery journey. And honestly, I have NO idea why more clinicians don’t talk about this.

Let’s talk about elevating your leg post-surgery. I know, it sounds simple, but the way you do it can make a massive difference. It’s not just about comfort (although that’s nice too); it’s actually key for two super important things:

1️⃣ Getting your knee straight.
If you sit with your knee straight now, you’re setting yourself up to regain full extension later without the struggle. Trust me, this is HUGE for your rehab progress.

2️⃣ Beating the swelling.
We all know swelling can be the ultimate pain in the… knee. But here’s the fix: Elevate your leg in line with or above your heart to get that swelling down as quickly as possible. It’s honestly the BEST thing you can do for your knee.

Now, here’s where things can go wrong. I’ve attached two images to show you how to elevate your leg properly vs. how NOT to do it. (You’re welcome!)

The Do’s and Don’ts of Elevation

Don’t:

  • Put a pillow under your calf or lower leg. (I know it’s tempting, but don’t do it!)
  • Let your knee bend while elevating.

Do:

  • Place support under your heel/Achilles area ONLY.
  • Keep your knee as straight as possible.
  • Elevate your leg high, ideally above your heart.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “This doesn’t sound comfortable at all!” And you’re right it’s not the most comfy position. But here’s the deal: Doing it the right way can take WEEKS off your rehab. Weeks! Isn’t a little discomfort worth that?

So, next time you’re lounging post-surgery, make sure your leg is in the right position. I promise, you’ll thank me later.
